On October 16, a bridge in Simpson County, Mississippi, collapsed during demolition work, resulting in at least three fatalities and four serious injuries, according to an Associated Press report.

The Mississippi Department of Transportation confirmed in a statement that the collapsed bridge was located over the Strong River along Interstate 149. It had been closed to traffic since September 18 due to ongoing construction.

Sheriff Paul Mahoney of Simpson County verified the casualties but did not provide further details on the incident.

Additionally, the Mississippi Department of Transportation mentioned that an inspector from their office was present at the construction site during the collapse, and fortunately, that inspector was unharmed.

Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the collapse.
