On September 26, members of the overseas Chinese community convened at the Chinese Cuisine Prosperity Base at Yangzhou University for the event titled “Overseas Chinese Experience Jiangsu, Feel the Charm of Yangzhou.” The gathering focused on strategies to enhance the presence of Chinese cuisine around the world.
The restaurant industry represents a vital segment of the overseas Chinese community, with estimates indicating that nearly 700,000 Chinese restaurants are operating globally. Among the roughly 60 million overseas Chinese, about half are linked to the restaurant sector and its associated fields. These restaurants serve as cultural touchpoints, introducing many foreigners to the richness of Chinese heritage through the culinary experiences they offer.
Meng Xiangren, director of the prosperity base at Yangzhou University, shared insights into the center’s mission and development with the attendees. He highlighted that this is the first officially established base by the State Council’s Overseas Chinese Affairs Office specifically aimed at promoting Chinese cuisine. The center’s goal is to bolster the global image of Chinese food, foster collaboration within the industry, support the community development of overseas Chinese, and encourage cultural exchanges between China and the international community.
During the event, both students and faculty demonstrated the intricacies of Huaiyang cuisine, leaving participants amazed by the craftsmanship involved in the dishes. “We strive to provide a well-rounded experience of Chinese culinary culture through a combination of visual, auditory, and taste elements, allowing overseas Chinese to truly appreciate the allure of Chinese food,” explained Pang Chunkui, deputy director of the Yangzhou Overseas Chinese Affairs Office.
Food knows no boundaries; it is more than just nourishment; it embodies culture. Chinese cuisine acts as a friendly ambassador, showcasing the depth and diversity of Chinese heritage. Event attendees expressed that witnessing the exceptional skills of the culinary masters at Yangzhou University not only deepened their appreciation for Chinese cuisine but also strengthened their commitment to promote and disseminate Chinese culture globally, contributing to the internationalization of Chinese cuisine.
