Recently opened Napa Costco might just have the best wine section in the United States, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The store, which had its grand opening on Friday, October 18, features a wine area led by Selman Medina, a legendary figure in the Bay Area’s Costco community.
Medina has spent 11 years commuting to the Novato Costco’s wine section, widely regarded as the best among all Costcos in California. He is one of only 30 wine stewards employed across Costco locations nationwide and a co-founder of two wine steward programs.
Upon hearing that a Costco was opening in his hometown of Napa, where he has lived for 35 years, Medina promptly applied for a transfer. His extensive knowledge of wine, along with his charm and friendliness, is likely to attract many customers from Novato to Napa.
In many ways, Medina’s role resembles that of a sommelier. He engages with customers, recommending wines he believes they will enjoy, and he is, after all, a Costco customer himself. “What I love about wine is its connection,” he explains. “Wine is a privilege, a reward.”
For his many patrons, Medina has become a trusted wine expert, extending his advice even outside of Costco. Customers frequently text him for wine recommendations for special occasions. “He’s a celebrity at Costco. He could have his own YouTube channel,” said David Wise, a longtime customer from Novato. “He always tells the truth; he buys the wine himself.”
For instance, Medina was recently taken by a wine called “Son of a Butcher,” crafted by Napa winemaker Yannick Rousseau. This Tannat-based red blend, known for its bold yet often overlooked character, intrigued Medina. He personally promoted it, sharing his enthusiasm with customers, and within three days, he sold an entire pallet.
We asked Medina to recommend three exceptional wines available at the new Napa Costco, and here are his picks:
1. **Louis M. Martini Monte Rosso Gnarly Vine Zinfandel, Sonoma Valley – $58.99 (regularly priced at $100):** Medina remarked, “This vineyard is excellent for producing Zinfandel.”
2. **Baker & Hamilton Vine Hill Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon, Oakville – $65.99 (typically priced at $125-150):** He considers this to be one of the best bargains in Napa Costco’s wine section, coming from one of Napa’s most esteemed vineyards.
3. **Viñedos del Contino, Contino Blanco, Rioja – $39.99 (hard to find elsewhere):** Speaking about this Viura and Grenache Blanc blend that undergoes barrel fermentation, Medina stated, “This is a very unique blend with a long-lasting finish.”
