On October 17th, the Iranian Permanent Mission to the United Nations commented on the death of Yahya Sinwar, a leader of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas). According to a report by The Guardian, the mission stated that Sinwar’s passing would strengthen the “spirit of resistance” in the region.

The Iranian delegation took to social media, saying, “When people see the martyr Sinwar confronting the enemy bravely on the battlefield… their spirit of resistance will be uplifted.” They further emphasized that “as long as occupation and aggression persist, the resistance will continue.”

Reuters reported that Sinwar was regarded by Israel as one of the masterminds behind the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023. On August 6, 2024, he succeeded Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in an attack in Tehran, becoming the new leader of Hamas’s political bureau.

On the same day as the Iranian statement, the Israel Defense Forces and the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) issued a joint announcement, confirming that Sinwar had died as a result of military operations in the Gaza Strip. As of now, Hamas has not responded to this development.
