On the evening of October 26, the grand Guizhou Theater in Guiyang resonated with the powerful performances of the Hong Kong Opera singers, featuring beloved classics such as “The Toreador Song,” “Habanera,” and “Walking Down the Street.”
The concert, titled “Under the Lion Rock,” showcased the immense talent of Mo Hualun, one of China’s three renowned tenors, alongside young singers from the Hong Kong Opera. Together, they delivered a captivating blend of Western opera excerpts from Puccini, Bizet, Lehár, and Verdi, alongside Chinese classics like “I Love You, China.” The audience also enjoyed popular Hong Kong tracks such as “Under the Lion Rock,” “The Great Wall Will Never Fall,” “I Like You,” and “Boundless Seas and Skies,” many of which inspired sing-alongs from the crowd.
Yuan Jianuo, Director of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Chengdu, emphasized that “Under the Lion Rock” embodies the resilience and forward-moving spirit of Hong Kong. He expressed a desire to share this proud ethos through the concert, allowing the people of Guizhou to experience the unique cultural fusion of Hong Kong and appreciate its stories.
Prior to the main concert, young singers from the Hong Kong Opera treated the audience to an impromptu performance during a street concert in Guiyang on October 25. Soprano Wang Bingbing shared, “We are using this grassroots approach to bring classical music closer to everyone. It allows us to connect and interact with the audience, which is something I’ve always looked forward to.”
Yuan Jianuo further noted, “Beyond cultural exchanges, Hong Kong, as a center for cross-cultural dialogue, hopes for more opportunities to connect with Guizhou. We aspire to foster collaboration across various sectors, including trade, technology, and education.”
