According to a report by the Associated Press on October 21, U.S. authorities have confirmed that a shooting occurred in central Mississippi in the early hours of October 19, resulting in three fatalities and eight injuries. Police have indicated that at least two individuals were involved in the gunfire.
The incident took place shortly after a homecoming football game at a local school, where around 200 to 300 people were celebrating on a nearby road. Holmes County Sheriff Willie March noted that a fight broke out among some men during the festivities, although the police did not provide details on what sparked the altercation.
“It was complete chaos at the scene,” March recounted. “As soon as the shooting started, people began to flee.”
Reports reveal that among the deceased, two were 19 years old and another was 25. The injured individuals were airlifted to a local hospital for treatment.
Sheriff March remarked that in this county, which has a population of nearly 16,000 residents, such shooting incidents are not uncommon, and disputes among young people often escalate to gun violence.
As highlighted by the Gun Violence Archive, there have been 425 mass shooting incidents in the United States since the beginning of 2024, with a total of 13,631 deaths attributed to various forms of gun violence. The organization defines a mass shooting as an incident in which at least four people (excluding the shooter) are killed or wounded.
