On September 14th, during a Mid-Autumn Festival celebration in Washington, D.C., we had the opportunity to sit down with Chinese Ambassador to the U.S., Xie Feng. At this gathering, aptly titled “Returning Home: Family Reunion,” approximately 200 attendees, including overseas Chinese, students, and representatives from Chinese-funded institutions, were present to hear his insights.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador Xie offered warm holiday greetings and heartfelt wishes to the Chinese community in the United States. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a strong connection among the Chinese people across the Taiwan Strait. He discussed the significance of the “1992 Consensus” and firmly opposed “Taiwan independence,” underlining the need for peaceful development in cross-strait relations that prioritizes the overall interests and long-term growth of the Chinese nation.
Reflecting on the relationship between the U.S. and China, Ambassador Xie pointed out that this year marks the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations. He reminisced about how, half a century ago, the Taiwan issue did not hinder a historic handshake between the two nations. Citing the three Joint Communiqués, he reiterated that there is only one China, with Taiwan as part of it, asserting that the current Taiwan issue should not disrupt the stable development of U.S.-China relations either.
Ambassador Xie was candid in addressing the dynamics of U.S.-China relations, stating that China does not interfere in America’s internal matters, nor does it wish for the U.S. to experience setbacks. He called on the United States to respect China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, especially regarding Taiwan, urging adherence to commitments regarding “Taiwan independence” and the principle of one China.
Highlighting the significance of a healthy and stable U.S.-China relationship, he asserted that it aligns with the fundamental interests of both peoples and is essential for the wellbeing of Chinese expatriates in America. Ambassador Xie expressed confidence in the ability of both nations to transcend historical rivalries, advocating for mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation to guide bilateral relations toward a stable, healthy, and sustainable future.
