On October 21, in Xiamen, Chen Liren, the grandson of Chen Jiageng, remarked, “A century and a half ago, my grandfather was born in the beautiful coastal area of Jimei in Xiamen. His spirit and essence embody the unique characteristics of this city: born by the sea, striving toward it, grounded in integrity and determination, and believing that hard work leads to success.”

As he participated in a series of events celebrating the 150th anniversary of his grandfather’s birth, themed “Promoting the Spirit of Jiageng, Fulfilling the Dream of National Rejuvenation,” Chen Liren reflected on his return to Xiamen. “I have witnessed the remarkable achievements of Xiamen as a Special Economic Zone, as well as the development of New China. We feel immense joy and pride in these accomplishments.”

At the age of 17, Chen Jiageng left his hometown to pursue business ventures in Southeast Asia, transforming from a young boy in a fishing village into a prominent Chinese entrepreneur abroad. Throughout his life, he devoted his resources to education, fostering a new wave of learning both at home and abroad. A staunch patriot, especially during the outbreak of the War of Resistance against Japan, he raised substantial funds and mobilized overseas Chinese workers to support the motherland, becoming a symbol of unity in the battle against Japanese aggression.

Chen Liren believes that his grandfather’s extraordinary life exemplified the commitment to his oath: “True patriotism comes from genuine character, and true achievement can save the nation.” He left behind a rich legacy of spiritual wealth and educational heritage for future generations.

“Our Chen clan originates from the Central Plains and has its roots in southern Fujian, and now we are spreading globally,” Chen Liren stated. “Our bloodline naturally carries the unwavering national spirit of the Chinese people, along with the belief that ‘hard work leads to success’ inherent in the Min Nan culture.”
