On October 19, the World Journal held the “2024 Silver Living Expo” at the Qiaojiao Center in the Bay Area, attracting hundreds of attendees. This event featured renowned speakers from the Bay Area and dozens of booths, offering valuable information on financial management and healthcare for the senior community, addressing their everyday challenges.

Li Mingbin, General Manager of the World Journal’s San Francisco office, explained that this is the first time the World Journal is hosting the “Silver Living Expo” in the Bay Area. The term “silver,” he noted, is generally used to refer to individuals aged 60 and above, emphasizing their significance in social, economic, and cultural spheres. It reflects an active, healthy, and high-quality lifestyle rather than merely an indication of aging. The silver generation not only symbolizes a change in age but also represents a new way of living in later years, highlighting the importance of health, vitality, and dignity.

Li remarked that as the population ages, this demographic’s size and influence continue to grow. Society is increasingly recognizing the needs and welfare of older adults. They are not just valuable assets to society but also pillars of their families. It is essential, he stated, for everyone to consider how to enable seniors to lead fulfilling and healthy lives.

Zhuang Yashu, Director of the Qiaojiao Center, expressed gratitude on behalf of the Overseas Community Affairs Council for the World Journal’s ongoing support for the community, providing living information, mainstream news, and connections to their homeland, which serves as a spiritual resource for expatriates.

Zhuang emphasized that the silver generation is embarking on a new chapter in life and thanked the World Journal for gathering crucial information to enrich retirees’ lives and help them transition into a new phase during their golden years.

The expo featured four main themes: healthcare consultations, financial trust seminars, leisure activities, and mind-body experiences, along with many professional doctors offering free medical consultations and health screenings to address health concerns of the elderly.

Experts, including Nicole Hung from Van Berg, Grace Lee from SCAN Health, and Li Duanjian from LTK Wealth Management, addressed common questions regarding Medicare and provided updates for 2025. Liang Juanhua, founder and president of CBC Financial, talked about retirement financial planning, while dietitian Xiao Zhiqi shared tips on healthy eating to prevent osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases.

Attendee Ms. Cai, age 89, found the presentations on Alzheimer’s disease particularly valuable. Although she remains healthy and mobile, she wants to learn about potential diseases and preventive measures rather than waiting until health issues arise.

The event also included traditional Chinese medicine consultations offered by the Bay Area Mother’s Classroom as well as acupuncture experiences, showcasing a holistic approach to health and wellness for seniors.
