In a tragic incident reported from Kampala, Uganda, a fuel tanker overturned in the central Wakiso region on October 22, leading to an explosion and fire that resulted in the deaths of at least 11 individuals, including two minors.
Witnesses shared that many of the victims rushed to the overturned tanker to siphon fuel after the accident occurred. Patrick Onyango, a spokesperson for the police in the capital city of Kampala, stated in a press release that the deceased were “burned beyond recognition.”
Onyango emphasized that this devastating event serves as a critical reminder of the inherent dangers associated with fuel tanker accidents and the importance of exercising caution when handling hazardous materials.
Additionally, the fire destroyed four nearby buildings, affecting nine businesses in the area.
Reports indicate that the injured have been transported to local medical facilities for treatment. Police are currently conducting an investigation to ascertain the exact number and identities of those injured.
This incident follows a similar tragedy in August 2019, when a fuel tanker explosion in the western Rubirizi district resulted in at least 22 fatalities.
