On October 22, 2024, the Cross-Strait (Jingdezhen) Ceramic Culture Exchange event and the Exhibition of Cross-Strait Ceramic Artists’ Works officially kicked off in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province. This gathering brought together ceramic artists from both sides of the Taiwan Strait, as well as young talent from Taiwan, all united by a shared passion for exploring the charm and value of ceramic culture.
Jingdezhen is often referred to as the city that embodies half of the history of ceramics, thriving due to its rich porcelain heritage. Over 300 Taiwanese ceramic artists have established their careers here, creating what is known as the “Jing漂” phenomenon. New Taipei City’s Yingge District is also celebrated as a ceramic capital in Taiwan, affectionately dubbed “Taiwan’s Jingdezhen.”
Liu Jiaqiang, a member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the China Democratic League, emphasized the importance of this event as a dialogue platform for the ceramic art communities from both sides of the Taiwan Strait. “This exhibition in Jingdezhen showcases a shared cultural consciousness and a sense of responsibility among ceramic artists to promote Chinese ceramic culture together,” he remarked.
Throughout the event, organizers have scheduled various activities, including an exhibition featuring works by cross-strait ceramic artists, cultural exchange forums, and hands-on ceramic culture experiences. Artists and young Taiwanese participants will explore the cultural significances of ceramics at notable venues like the Jingdezhen China Ceramic Museum and the TaoXichuan Cultural and Creative Block.
Taiwanese artist Feng Ruilun shared, “Taiwan and the mainland share the same cultural roots. Our ceramic art carries the profound history and culture of this land.” He believes that this exchange extends beyond artistic techniques; it fosters deep interactions and exchanges of shared heritage.
Young Taiwanese artist Yang Qingyi expressed her excitement over visiting the lyrical birthplace of the song “Blue and White Porcelain,” stating, “As I stand here, I can almost hear the echoes of history. The blending of different creative philosophies and techniques will undoubtedly lead to the birth of ceramic works that reflect contemporary characteristics and artistic value.”
Shen Bingqiu, Deputy Director of the Taiwan Affairs Office of Jiangxi Province, noted the historical ties between Jiangxi and Taiwan, highlighting the solid foundation for economic cooperation and vibrant cultural exchanges. “I sincerely hope that ceramic artists from both sides enhance their communication and learn from one another, jointly passing down and promoting our outstanding traditional culture,” he stated.
Wu Caifeng, a member of the Standing Committee of the Jingdezhen Municipal Committee and Minister of the United Front Work Department, reiterated the city’s commitment to the principle of “One Family on Both Sides of the Strait.” He affirmed that Jingdezhen will continue to enhance cultural exchanges and cooperation while providing more opportunities for mutual understanding and friendship among people from both sides.
The event lasts for three days and is guided by the Zhongshan Cultural Exchange Association, co-hosted by the Taiwan Affairs Office of Jiangxi Province and the Jiangxi Provincial Committee of the China Democratic League.
