Dr. Tina Chiou is one of the few ophthalmologists in Los Angeles utilizing the latest Envision IPL/RF technology to treat dry eye patients. She is delighted to offer a non-invasive, medication-free, and long-lasting solution for those suffering from dry eye syndrome. In addition to her work with dry eye, Dr. Chiou is passionate about myopia management, employing Ortho-K, MiSight contact lenses, or atropine therapy to help young patients slow the progression of myopia. As an experienced optometrist, she is dedicated to providing high-quality eye care.

Growing up in Taiwan, Dr. Chiou completed her undergraduate and optometry education in the United States. She is fluent in both Mandarin and English and has previously served as a healthcare resident at the La Jolla Veterans Hospital. She earned her Doctor of Optometry degree from the State University of New York College of Optometry.

According to Dr. Chiou, dry eye syndrome occurs when the eyes do not produce enough tears to adequately keep the surface of the eyeballs moist. Factors contributing to this condition include prolonged screen time—such as staring at smartphones, computers, or TVs—which reduces blinking; wearing contact lenses; working in sealed environments; autoimmune diseases that cause inflammation of the tear glands; autonomic nervous system dysfunction; improper use of eye drops over time; and decreased tear gland function in older adults.

Forma-I utilizes bipolar radiofrequency (RF) technology to specifically target symptoms of dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). By safely heating the meibomian glands, it gently “melts” the thickened lipid material to help release trapped oils. This heat stimulation promotes collagen production, attracting white blood cells and stem cells to the affected area, offering an anti-wrinkle effect for fine lines around the eyes while opening blocked glands to improve tear production and secretion.

The latest IPL (intense pulsed light) treatment stands out for its high-intensity light, effectively treating patients with meibomian gland dysfunction-related dry eye. The enhanced light penetrates deeper into the skin layers, effectively addressing inflammation, ocular rosacea, and infections caused by demodex mites. The treatment is quick, providing noticeable improvements faster than traditional IPL treatments, allowing patients to enjoy shorter recovery times. Thanks to advanced cooling techniques, patients typically experience minimal discomfort during the procedure.

With just one IPL session, significant improvements can be observed, with optimal results seen four to six weeks post-treatment. Depending on individual concerns, a series of treatments spaced four to six weeks apart may be recommended. Sessions generally last between 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the area targeted and the severity of the condition.

By addressing the root causes of dry eye and inflammation, InMode’s EnVision offers patients the opportunity for lasting relief and improved quality of life. Patients can say goodbye to reliance on lubricating eye drops, enjoying refreshed eyes even at the end of the day.
